Solo & Small Firm 2016 — Fun, Friends and Knowledge!

written by Annika

Missouri requires lawyers to attend continuing education classes each year so that we stay on top of the ever-changing legal world.  A great way to meet this requirement and network with other attorneys is by attending the Missouri Solo & Small Firm Conference, which just concluded at Tan-Tar-A.  The conference has long been held at Tan-Tar-A, and reached a solid attendance of over 1100 attorneys by 2012, but the site was shifted to Branson for the past three years for a change of scenery.  Attendance declined into the range of 800 attorneys; time will tell if the numbers will bounce back.

Four other Macon County attorneys attended, and I also ran into several of my fellow attorneys from my years in the Kansas City area and several Columbia attorney friends.  It is always great to see one’s colleagues out of “court attire” and in a setting where we can have fun.

From the learning perspective, I gleaned updated info on DWI defense and traffic cases, what can and can’t be done with social media use/monitoring of parties to a case, learned some new discovery questions to use, picked up some helpful info for business agreements, learned how to use technology and visual aids more effectively with case presentation, as well as getting scared about various technology threats.

My family joined me on this trip, so we took advantage of pool amenities in the evenings, visited nearby state parks and spent the evenings and early mornings sitting on a screened porch enjoying the view of the Lake and the monster-sized boats that kept roaring by.  Oh, and we managed to visit the wonderful exhibitors at the conference and came away with enough ink pens to carry me through the next year!

Now comes the hard part….returning to the office and putting this knowledge to use for my clients!
